Choose Sample if your numbers are a selection from a larger group. Choose Population if they are every value in the group.

Statistics homework and exam practice take a lot of arithmetic. This free statistics calculator takes a list of numbers and returns the mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, variance and standard deviation at once. It also gives the standard error, coefficient of variation, skewness, outliers and the z-score for any value. Switch between sample and population formulas, and open the working to see every deviation and square. It is useful for school, university, ACCA and CA students.

How to Use:

  1. Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Choose Sample if your data is part of a larger group, or Population if it is the whole group.
  3. Optionally enter a value to get its z-score.
  4. Click Calculate to see all the results.
  5. Open Show working to check each step, or copy the results into your notes.

FAQs:
Q: What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
A: A population divides by n. A sample divides by n − 1, which corrects for estimating from a smaller group.
Q: How are the quartiles calculated?
A: The calculator uses the inclusive method, the same as Excel’s QUARTILE.INC. Some textbooks use a different method, so small differences are possible.
Q: How are outliers found?
A: A value is flagged if it is more than 1.5 times the interquartile range below Q1 or above Q3.
Q: How many numbers can I enter?
A: Up to 5,000 values.
