Print Size and DPI Calculator – Free Photo Print Tool

How big can you print your photo before it turns blurry? Our free Print Size and DPI Calculator tells you in seconds. Enter your image size in pixels and get the maximum print size at 300, 200, 150 and 100 DPI, in both inches and centimeters. You can also work backwards and see how many pixels you need for a poster, or check whether your photo is sharp enough for a specific print size. It also tells you how much of your image will be cropped, and how far away to stand to view the print. It works for photographers, Etsy sellers, print-on-demand shops and anyone ordering a canvas or poster. No signup is needed.

How to Use

  1. Max Print Size: enter your image width and height in pixels (or pick a camera preset), then choose a DPI to see the biggest print you can make. You also get a chart of standard sizes (4×6, 8×10, A4, 16×20 and more) with a quality rating for each.
  2. Pixels Needed: enter the print size you want in inches, cm or mm, choose a DPI, and see the pixel dimensions and megapixels required. You can add a bleed if your printer asks for one.
  3. Check Print Quality: enter your pixels and a print size to see the effective DPI, a quality rating, how much will be cropped, and the best viewing distance.
  4. Aim for 300 DPI for close-up prints, and 150–200 DPI for large posters and wall art.

FAQs:

What DPI should I use for printing photos?
300 DPI is the standard for sharp prints you view up close. For large posters and wall art that are seen from a distance, 150–200 DPI still looks good.

How big can I print a 12 megapixel photo?
A 12 MP photo (4000 × 3000 pixels) prints at about 13.3 × 10 inches at 300 DPI. At 200 DPI you can print up to 20 × 15 inches.

Is 72 DPI enough for printing?
No. 72 DPI is only suitable for screens. Printed at that resolution, photos look soft and pixelated.

What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes the resolution of an image, while DPI (dots per inch) describes how many ink dots a printer places. In practice, people use the two terms for the same thing when ordering prints.

Can I print a low-resolution image large?
You can, but it will look softer. Larger prints are viewed from farther away, so lower DPI is more acceptable. You can also upscale the image with software before printing.
