Q: How do I calculate my dog’s age in human years?
A: Enter your dog’s age and size. The first year counts as about 15 human years and the second year adds about 9. After that, each dog year adds 4 to 7 human years depending on size: 4 for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large and 7 for giant.
Q: Is the “1 dog year = 7 human years” rule accurate?
A: No. It is a simple myth. Dogs mature very quickly in their first two years, and larger breeds age faster later in life. That is why this calculator uses your dog’s size.
Q: Why do large dogs age faster than small dogs?
A: Giant and large breeds tend to have shorter lifespans, so they reach their senior years sooner. A small dog may be senior at around 10 years old, while a giant dog may be senior at around 6.
Q: What is the epigenetic dog age?
A: It comes from a 2019 UC San Diego study that compared DNA changes in dogs and humans. The formula is 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, and it applies to dogs from 1 year old. It was developed using Labrador Retrievers, so treat it as an estimate for other breeds.
